Description
The Space Grant program offers a dedicated 3–4 month residency for dance, movement, theater, and multidisciplinary performance artists. This residency provides a supportive environment for artists to deeply engage with their work and explore new creative directions. Space Grants recognize the need for both experienced and emerging artists to have uninterrupted time and space to experiment and innovate. Surveys consistently highlight access to space as a critical resource for NYC’s performing artists. We are dedicated to maintaining space grants as a fundamental part of our Artist Residency offerings.
The Space Grant program is BAX’s longest-running initiative for artist development. Initially created for dance artists, it expanded in the late 1990s to include theater and performance artists. Many of our Artists In Residence began their journey with BAX through the Space Grant program. Recipients of Space Grants receive a stipend, free rehearsal space, and the chance to share their work with fellow grantees and BAX Artist Programs Staff during an in-progress showing and feedback session.
Although the Parent Artist Space Grant has been phased out, as of 2023, all resident artists at BAX with school-age children are eligible for free tuition for any youth class in dance, theater, and tumbling during their residency.
