Established in 1993, the AIR program has supported over 60 dance, theater, and multidisciplinary performance artists. This residency offers New York City-based artists the opportunity to explore their research inquiries, creative ideas, and artistic practices within a supportive artist cohort. Participants receive both peer exchange and mentorship from experienced artist advisors. AIRs are dedicated to racial justice and cultural equity and value the chance to develop their work in an inclusive, multigenerational, and socially engaged community of learning.
For the 2024/2025 season, three artists will receive 450 hours of free rehearsal space over an 18-month period (January 2024 to June 2025), an $8,000 stipend, and advisory, marketing, and production support to advance their artistic practice. Mentorship is provided by Artist Advisors Abigail Browde and nia love, with additional guidance from BAX Artistic Director Marlène Ramírez-Cancio and Senior Director of Programs and Production Lucia Scheckner. BAX also supports parent artists by offering free arts programming for their school-age children.
The residency includes participation in three benchmark presentations: two Open Studios (May 2024 and November 2024) and a Work-In-Progress public performance/presentation (May 2025, with documentation and livestream option) at BAX. Open Studios can take various forms, such as open rehearsals, public workshops, or practice-based engagements, all designed to advance the artists’ research and practice.
