In the year marking the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death, the ESO plays his lyrical and powerful Symphony No. 5, a work in which many listeners hear despair beneath the glorious melodies. The work is paired with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme with cello soloist Christine Lamprea. Opening the concert is a work by Jonathan Bailey Holland, composer and dean at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music: Motor City Dance Mix. It is a vibrant musical collage, in homage to Holland’s home city of Detroit, influenced by classical, hip-hop, jazz, and other musical genres.
